Reviews for Food & Wine -> Gourmet Tour In Piran
Ending our Slovenia trip on a high!

Jan's food tour through Piran was the perfect thing to end our stay in Slovenia! Jan is so friendly and chatty, and has a deep knowledge of Piran (and Slovenia in general!), it's historical influences, and it's local delicacies. Each stop we made featured a couple of thoughtfully selected dishes that were not only fresh and immensely tasty, but also sourced locally and prepared by experienced and innovative chefs. The tour also included a stop at a traditional salt shop, several places of historical interest around the city, and a shop selling locally produced wines, olive oils, and truffle products. All in all, the food, wines, and other tasty bits and pieces were excellent, and Jan was the perfect guide, thank you Jan!

This is a must if you are visiting Piran. Jan is a great local guide and he focuses on showing you the best local food and wine. Each dish is amazing, fresh and unique. The tour also includes local wines and olive oils which are very tasty and make great gifts. Jan keeps the group size small and ensures that everyone feels welcome. Don't miss it!

Jan was simply amazing. He shared the best of his city through food and wine. We started with caper paste from a vendor in the farmers market. Then on to a salt store to understand how salt is made and the importance to Piran’s history.
Then the food fest began! First up a local delicacy—sea bass carpaccio style. Next up, mussels—my husband’s favorite seafood. I’m not usually a fan but I couldn’t get enough of these!!! The sauce they were simmered in was simple—wine, garlic, lemon and a few other things I can’t remember. Both of these dishes were paired with a really good white wine. I’ve forgotten the grape but it was comparable to a Sauvignon Blanc.
Next up…risotto with squid ink. I’ve never had it before but will look for it in the future! Again, paired with the white wine. Then it was on to a restaurant for the best filled pasta shells I’ve ever had. The pasta was made fresh every day by the women next door. The stuffing was ground filet and melted in your mouth. Paired with red wine beautifully. Next door was the “truffle guy” where we sampled white and black truffle spreads. OMG, so good!!!
We finished up with the most amazing gelato—it was gramma’s cream custard flavor with lemons. What a perfect ending to the tour.
Not only did Jan share his country’s food traditions with us, he also was able to find transportation for my husband so he didn’t have to walk so far. That was so helpful for us and really added to our enjoyment of the tour.
Highly recommend this tour!!!

We spent a lovely early evening with Jan in Piran last night. His tour was informative, well-crafted and professional. Jan is also a very gracious guide who caters to each person on the tour. I highly recommend signing up for this BEFORE you arrive and it be your first intro to Piran. You will enjoy it very much! The food tasting at Gourmistra was amazing and a hidden gem! Jan also gives great restaurant recommendations too!
Thank you to Mattia of Gourmistra who catered to every request with utmost patience and professionalism.
