On the western side of the Julian Alps, where the alpine world meets the Mediterranean climate, lies the small town of Bovec. Surrounded by imposing mountains and next to the famous Soča River, it is the place to spend your walking holidays. There is so much natural beauty to discover in the Soča Valley, three days is just enough to experience most of it. Bovec is located on the border of the Triglav National Park (TNP), Slovenia’s only national park. It covers an area of 840 square kilometres, one of which is the scenic Soča Valley. Its most beautiful part, inside the TNP, is only a 10-minute drive away from Bovec. It is where the iconic Soča River has carved up beautiful gorges full of emerald green pools. The valley is so picturesque it was a part of a few Hollywood films, most notably The Chronicles of Narnia.
Start your holiday with a scenic ride over the Vršič Pass and into the stunning Soča Valley. A journey to the heart of the Julian Alps with beautiful stops with magnificent views will be a wonderful prelude of what’s to follow in the following days. Enjoy a traditional meal, or a fun barbecue in case you join another escorted small group of hikers to get to know everybody better. Enjoy some free time in the small town of Bovec in the afternoon, relax and get ready for the next few days.
We will spend the first day exploring the beautiful Soča Valley. We will visit the Great and the Small Soča Gorges, with their deep turquoise pools of water. From there, we will go into the adjacent valley of Lepena and walk by the colourful green streams of the Šunik Water Grove, which is an excellent place for relaxation. After lunch, we will drive back closer to Bovec to do a short hike to the most water-rich waterfall in Slovenia, the Boka Waterfall. With its total height of 144 metres and 18 metres of width, it is the mightiest waterfall in Slovenia, especially in spring, when the snow in the mountains is melting.
As we want to end your holiday on a high note, we certainly won’t return to Ljubljana the same way we came. After leaving Bovec, we will head to the Predil Pass and enter Italy. The other side of the pass will greet us with the peaceful Lake Predil, where we will stop for a short while.
