To Marko, with love. We were nourished by the heavens today. Four middle-aged adventure- seekers were served an experience unlike any other. Our ambitious appetites were served by a Triglav delicacy. A Slovenian sandwich, with Marko (our hero) as the scrumptious bread on both sides and a myriad of delights tucked inside this gourmet feast. A FEAST OF THE SENSES. Marko is the alpha and the omega of this 11-hour trek through the finest senses that Slovenia has to offer. He is more than a guide, he is a guru. He is more than a chauffeur, he is a champion (ski jumper). He is more than a sightseer, he is a servant. First, Slovenia is God's country. What a revelation upon our first visit. I’ve never been inside a more pristine country. Around every turn is a breathtaking landscape to admire. Marko picked us up at the doorsteps of our treehouse lodge and dedicated his entire day to exposing us to the native beauty that makes him so proud of his homeland. The emerald forests sing, the creeks whistle and the lakes shine in this thorough excursion narrated by thoughtful insights Marko has gleaned while hiking, swimming, biking and rafting every nook of Slovenia over four decades. We marveled at his mastery of local history, biology, botany, and geology. Like a professor in biker shorts, he enlightened us with stories and fun facts as he led us past mind-boggling waterfalls and life-altering vistas. He was attentive and made sure we had ample breaks for snacks, lunch, water, and restroom visits. After baptizing us in the Soca River, he handed us off to the rafting experts for the pinnacle of our perfect day. While Marko resigned himself to taking snapshots for our memory books, Jernej took the reins of our Soca River Rafting leg of the day. And here is a man who is comfortable in his skin. With rafting savant Toby, by his side, we were treated to what became the singular highlight of our 22-day European Road Trip. We cannot be more grateful to Jernej and Toby for providing us with all the training, leadership, and encouragement we needed to enjoy the most triumphant river trip. 1-2-3 - Mavericks! In between swashbuckling rapids were the most serene moments where the Skipper (Jernej) would frame the surrounding nature in the most picturesque way as we drifted into infinity. By day’s end we had kissed a waterfall, grazed with sheep, sipped god’s nectar, and made a new friend or three. Thank you, Marko for the most transcendent day. Everyone deserves the bliss he bestowed upon us today. To infinity and beyond.
