Overview

The Bike Slovenia Green cycling tour connects destinations that have been awarded the Slovenia Green certificate by developing their tourism in a sustainable manner. Be a responsible traveler and discover the most beautiful parts of Slovenia on a bike! This very diverse cycling tour starts in Kranjska Gora and runs by the famous Alpine lakes of Bled and Bohinj after passing through the beautiful Radovna valley. Hopping aboard one of the world’s most scenic railways, easy cycling continues along the emerald green Soča river. A land of rolling hills and friendly locals is next on the list. Towering trees give way to vineyards and olive trees in Goriška Brda, famous for high-quality wines. Comfortable cycling continues through the fascinating karstic topography, before the road joins the abandoned Parenzana railway track, slowly descending towards the town of Koper on the Adriatic coast. A dip in the sea and a visit to a local seafood restaurant are strongly recommended.

Arrival to Kranjska Gora

The Bike Slovenia Green cycling holiday starts with an overnight in the beautiful mountain resort of Kranjska Gora situated at the foot of the Julian Alps. Time permitting, a visit of the crystal clear Jasna Lake is a great idea. With its green and unspoiled nature, Kranjska Gora offers plenty of opportunities for an authentic, healthy and active holiday in all seasons. Its tourism offer is based on sustainable development, natural and cultural heritage and a healthy living climate.

DAY 02 Kranjska Gora - Bled

From Kranjska Gora, a pleasantly quiet cycling road leads to another Alpine village of Mojstrana, where it enters one of the prettiest alpine valleys in Slovenia, the Radovna River Valley. Since the area is a part of the Triglav National Park, mass tourism is limited here. The Valley is well-known due to its pristine nature and a dramatic 1.6 kilometer-long Vintgar Gorge. Easy cycling is accompanied by views of mountain tops and horses grazing on the surrounding meadows. Reaching the final destination of the day, the famously beautiful Bled, it would be a pity not to visit the tiny island in the middle of the lake, climb the impressive Bled Castle overlooking the town, or taste the famous Bled cake called “Kremšnita”. Bled is a proud recipient of the Slovenia Green Gold destination certificate and a member of the Alpine Pearls group, the objective of which is to promote sustainable mobility. Local residents are sustainability-oriented and invite visitors to follow their example.

Bled - Bohinj

The next day begins with uphill cycling to the Pokljuka Plateau, which rests at an altitude of 1300 meters and serves as a starting point for many hikes. The forested plateau is dotted with shingle-covered wooden cottages, which are typical of the Slovenian mountain pastures. Back in the old days, they were used as homes for shepherds or dairy production facilities. The highlight of the day is the Zajamniki mountain pasture in the central area of Pokljuka, known for its beautiful cottages and a perfect view over Lake Bohinj. Using mostly asphalt and some forest roads, the track slowly descends towards Bohinj and eventually reaches Lake Bohinj, the largest natural lake in Slovenia. Many visitors to Slovenia say they have never seen a lake more beautiful than Lake Bled – until they come to Bohinj.

Bohinj - Brda

One of the most spectacular views of Lake Bohinj is found at the railway station located just above it. From here, a panoramic train ride is organized to travel from the heart of the Alps to the Soča Valley. Built at the beginning of the 20th century, this historic railway used to connect Austria and Germany with the port of Trieste. Upon arrival to the tranquil town of Most na Soči, one can admire the emerald waters of the Soča River, considered to be one of the most beautiful rivers in Europe. Heading out of town, the cycling route passes the magnificent old railroad bridge in Solkan, featuring the longest stone arch in the world. The route then follows the river flow and briefly enters Italy before turning back to Slovenia’s Goriška Brda region. A land of gentle, rolling hills reminds of Tuscany. The wineries here are famous across the world for their high-quality vintages and hospitality.

Brda - Komen: Cycling through vineyards

On the fifth day of the Bike Slovenia Green tour, touring continues through the typical hilly landscape of Goriška Brda full of winding vineyards. Short ascents and descents lead to the romantic Italian town of Gorizia. Upon the return to the Slovenian side, the route crosses the Vipava river, slowly entering the magical world of Karst. In Cerje, one can admire the Peace memorial or climb the lookout tower for the best views of the area. An exciting ascent on a gravel road leads to Kostanjevica na Kraus, a typical karst village. Slovenian Karst is also a wine-growing region, as shown by 100 wine cellars included in the Karst Wine Route. Easy cycling comes to an end in the town of Komen, known by some of the most beautiful wineries in the region. This sustainable destination speaks to responsible visitors through its warm hospitality, authentic cuisine, calming walking and cycling paths, and many cultural features shaped by the locals.

Komen - Lokev

Leaving Komen behind, cycling resumes across the fascinating karstic landscape full of typical natural phenomena. The trail leads to tiny hilltop village of Štanjel, one of the oldest settlements in the region, known for its castle and the beautiful Ferrari Garden. Featuring traditional houses built in stone, Štanjel is a real showpiece of Karst architecture and culture. When cycling further towards Pliskovica, a stop in Prosciuterria Ščuka is a must. In the boutique family-owned prosciutto drying facility they use a classical seasoning process, which results in high-quality and aromatic authentic products.

Lokev - Koper

The last cycling day truly wraps up the diversity of Slovenia and of the tour itself. The route first overlooks the Gulf of Trieste, offering some spectacular views. A scenic ride along the Adriatic coast is characterized by rich Istrian vegetation and numerous small villages. Again, the road briefly enters Italy, before reaching the Slovenian village of Osp. The day continues with easy cycling along the river Rižana and following the Parenzana railway track, a now defunct narrow gauge railway that was in operation in the early 1900s, connecting Trieste and Poreč. The Bike Slovenia Green cycling tour ends in Koper, the capital of the Slovenian coast awarded with the Slovenia Green certificate. Here, the historical coastal town meets the green Istrian countryside, revealing incredible history and authentic experiences. Make sure not to leave Koper without trying delicious seafood and having a swim in the sea.

Reviews for Self-guided Bike Tour In Slovenia
Trip of a lifetime!

Without a doubt, this was the best trip of my life. For our honeymoon, my wife and I decided to do this 7-day self-guided bike tour in Slovenia with Visit GoodPlace, after a friend highly recommended it. Based on our friend's photos, I knew Slovenia would be amazing, but in person, I was absolutely blown away. The Visit GoodPlace tour is expertly curated, from the lodging they book, to the routes that take you through some of the most scenic and picturesque landscapes in the world, to the delicious restaurants they note along your travel route. The staff at Visit GoodPlace were all extremely helpful and kind (Sara and Katja and Matic) -- they worked with my wife and me from the moment we booked all the way through the end of the tour to answer questions, clarify details, and help us with any decisions that relied on local knowledge. We felt we were in very good hands -- and when traveling in Slovenia, the Visit GoodPlace brand seemed to be highly recognized and respected. The tour started with a pick-up in the capital city (Ljubljana, which is very lovely in its own right) to a drop-off in Kranjska Gora (an extremely charming Alpine town in the Julian Alps), along with your bikes. From there, the beauty just grows -- my wife and I had to pinch ourselves each day to make sure we weren't dreaming. Each day of the tour, there were multiple route options available, and many points of interest and favorite restaurants to choose from. The bike infrastructure in Slovenia is second to none -- the country has clearly made it a priority to provide comfortable and scenic biking for all ages and abilities, and has built car-free bike paths through some of the most stunning areas. Since the tour is self-guided via GPS maps loaded onto your cell phone, my wife and I went at our own pace and took plenty of stops whenever we wanted (mostly because everything was too beautiful). Kranjska Gora, Lake Bled, and Lake Bohinj were our absolute favorites, but it is impossible not to mention Soca Valley, Goriska Brda, and Koper as well. In fact, every stop is truly a must-see, due to the incredible variety of biomes that Slovenia boasts within a very small geographic area. Vintgar Gorge is an absolute must do, as are the Skocjan Caves, visiting the small family-run prosciutteria (Prsutarna Scuka), and jumping in every river and lake you pass (as my wife and I promised to each other, after seeing the first of many turquoise waters in Slovenia). I should mention that the food of Slovenia is delicious. There is a great blend of avant garde restaurants that are pushing the boundaries of Slovenian cuisine, and fantastic local places serving up classic staples such as pizza, pasta, goulash, sausage and potatoes, proscuitto and cheese, and other favorites. After hours of biking, it is a great pleasure to find yourself at any of these restaurants, and dig into generous portions over some glasses of fantastic local wines (from Goriska Brda area!) or local brews. The other thing that made this trip unforgettable and unparalleled was the sense of total safety. Slovenia is apparently one of the most wealth-equal countries in the world (see the Gini index) -- and it shows. My wife and I felt so safe throughout every part of Slovenia. We never had to worry about our belongings or our personal safety -- we totally trusted Visit GoodPlace and their staff, but also felt very trusting of everyone we encountered. On our tour, we had no worries or fears, which was a blessing indeed. In summary, this was the trip of a lifetime. We biked, we swam, we rowed, we walked, we hiked, we stand-up paddled, we ate, we drank, we laughed, we learned, we met kind locals, we made friends, we relaxed, we slept deeply, and we wistfully said goodbye to Slovenia...for now!
Slovenian Beauty, Culture and Visit GoodPlace's Service Excellence

Family members and I have completed three self-guided Visit GoodPlace tours: Green Gourmet, Alps to Adriatic, and custom Alps to Adriatic and Istrian Peninsula. Our experiences on all three trips were wonderful. Visit GoodPlace is simply one of the best service organizations that we have ever encountered. In our experience, they design and execute their tours perfectly. The cycling routes are created with meticulous care and maximize the beauty of Slovenia and Istria. In three trips covering hundreds of kilometers of riding, we were constantly reminded how much research goes into creating the best possible routes. The digital maps are constructed with great attention to detail. The accommodations that Visit GoodPlace books are also special. We invariably would end our days staying in beautiful, small boutique hotels that offered exceptional services, equaled by exceptionally welcoming hosts. We have had stays at accommodations that we will never forget. Great food is part of the cultures in Slovenia and Istria. Visit GoodPlace provides recommendations to restaurants that have served us meals that are so memorable. Behind the scenes, Visit GoodPlace delivers on the logistics behind self-guided tours expertly. The trip materials and briefings were personalized and comprehensive. The bikes that we rented were always in excellent shape. Luggage bags always get to the next destinations. Transfers to and from the start and end of the tours are excellent. The high quality of the behind-the-scenes logistics is a testament to a culture committed to service excellence. We have, and do, highly recommend Visit GoodPlace and Slovenia to our family and friends. And those who have completed tours feel the same way we do. We look forward to doing more Visit GoodPlace tours and visiting this wonderful region again. But with Visit GoodPlace's reputation for excellence growing so rapidly, we expect we will have to start booking much longer in advance!
