Explore the Slovenian mountainous region of the Julian Alps from two towns on the opposite side of the mountain range, Bled and Bovec. These guided walking holidays are divided into two halves, each giving you a better insight into the half of the region you are residing in. Slovenia is itself often talked about as a country of numerous landscapes. But even just one region, the Julian Alps, is diverse enough to be the focus of a week-long holiday. Most of it is protected in the area of the Triglav National Park, the only one of its kind in Slovenia. Between the more apparent rocky mountains lie bustling green valleys, powered by crystal clear streams and rivers, making the lakes and meadows rich with flora and fauna.
After exploring the town of Bled a little bit, we drive to Bohinj to take a cable car to the Vogel plateau.
The early morning will start with an optional sunrise hike to the Ojstrica viewing point above Lake Bled. For those eager to sacrifice some hours of their sleep, this will be an unforgettable experience with an iconic photo of the lake to remember it by.
The third day begins with a visit to the most popular attraction around Bled, the Vintgar Gorge. Carved by the Radovna river amidst the glorious vertical walls of surrounding hills, it is an unmissable sight for its magical waterfalls, pools and rapids. It’s hard to beat that beauty, but try we will.
It is time to move our base locations. We will drive over the scenic Vršič Pass road and descend down to the other side of the Julian Alps, to the Soča Valley and the alpine town of Bovec. The valley known for its iconic emerald green Soča River and the town are a paradise for active holidays in the great outdoors.
We will spend the fifth day exploring the beautiful Soča Valley. We will visit the Great and the Small Soča Gorges, with their deep turquoise pools of water. From there, we will go into the adjacent valley of Lepena and walk by the colourful green streams of the Šunik Water Grove, which is an excellent place for relaxation. After lunch, we will drive back closer to Bovec to do a short hike to the most water-rich waterfall in Slovenia, the Boka Waterfall. With its total height of 144 metres and 18 metres of width, it is the mightiest waterfall in Slovenia, especially in spring, when the snow in the mountains is melting.
This day’s path will drive us further south, where you can already see the influence of the Mediterranean climate on the alpine world. We will discover the rich history of town Kobarid under the picturesque Krn mountain range, where the bloody battles of the Isozo front raged during the height of the First World War.
After leaving Bovec, we will head to the Predil Pass and enter Italy. The other side of the pass will greet us with the peaceful Lake Predil, where we will stop for a short while.
