Kamnik

A medieval town at the foot of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, 23 kilometers north of Ljubljana. Two ruined castles — Mali Grad perched on a rocky outcrop in the old town center, and Stari Grad on the hill above — frame a compact historic core of Gothic and Baroque buildings. The Kamniška Bistrica valley stretches north into alpine meadows and hiking trails, while the old town's narrow streets hold independent shops, traditional gostilna restaurants, and the Franciscan monastery with its 15th-century library.
