Lipica is the place the Lipizzaner is named after. Archduke Charles II of Inner Austria founded the stud here in 1580 to supply horses to the Habsburg court in Vienna, and it has been breeding the same line on the same Karst pasture ever since — which makes it the oldest continuously operating stud farm in Europe still producing a single breed. The white horses of the Spanish Riding School in Vienna trace back to this limestone plateau.
The farm sits on around 300 hectares of walled pasture and oak avenues about 80 km from Ljubljana, close enough to the Italian border to be a standard stop on Karst-and-coast itineraries. Visits are guided only and run about an hour: the Velbanca stable of 1703 (the oldest on the estate), the carriage collection, the Lipikum museum covering four centuries of breeding records, and the estate church of St Anthony of Padua. Foals are born dark brown or black and lighten to white over six to ten years, which is why the paddocks are never uniformly white.
Pricing changes with the season, so check which you are booking. The winter tariff (26 March 2026 to 25 March 2027) is €16 adult, €12 student, €8 for children 6–14 and €39 for a family of two adults and up to three children. The richer summer "Meet the Lipizzan horse" programme, running 1 April–24 June and 7 September–1 November 2026, costs €23–25 adult, €12–15 for children, €59 family. Classical dressage performances run to a separate schedule and are ticketed separately — worth checking before you fix a date, because they are the reason many people come.
