Ljubljana Castle (Ljubljanski grad) sits 376 metres above the Old Town on Castle Hill, where a fortress has stood in some form since the early Middle Ages — likely 9th century, though stone records start around 1144. The current outer walls and towers are largely 15th–16th-century Habsburg-era reconstruction after the 1511 Idrija earthquake; the inner courtyards and the Outlook Tower (Razgledni stolp) you climb today were rebuilt in the 1980s and 90s after centuries as a barracks, then a prison, then a slum. The complete restoration finished in 2007.
The castle is more viewpoint and event venue than traditional museum. Two paid permanent exhibitions are inside: the Slovenian History Exhibition (a 25-minute walk through 5,000 years of Slovenian history) and the Virtual Castle / Time Machine (a 12-minute film tracing the building's evolution). Both are clean, modern, and family-friendly. The Outlook Tower at the top gives a 360° view across the Ljubljana basin — Kamnik Alps north, Karst plateau south. The chapel of St George is small but features the coats of arms of all the medieval Carniolan provinces. Free outdoor access lets you walk the courtyards, terraces, and Pentagonal Tower battlements without buying a ticket.
Most visitors take the funicular from Krekov trg in the Old Town — a 1-minute ride for €4 one way, €6 return, or €10 with castle entry included. A walking path zig-zags up in 15–20 minutes for those who prefer it. Allow 1.5–2 hours total: 30 minutes for the funicular round-trip, 30 minutes for the courtyards and tower view, 30–45 minutes for one of the two exhibitions. Add 1 hour if you stop for coffee or wine at the castle restaurant Strelec.
