Vintgar Gorge

Vintgar Gorge

A 1.6 km wooden walkway pinned to the cliffs of a limestone canyon near Bled

Podhom, Slovenia

Vintgar Gorge is the walk almost every Lake Bled itinerary should include and many miss. The Radovna river has cut a canyon roughly 250 metres deep through limestone, and since 1893 a wooden walkway has been bolted to its walls — 1.6 km of boardwalk and bridges that criss-cross directly above green water and rapids, finishing at the 13-metre Šum waterfall, the highest river waterfall in Slovenia.

It is easy walking rather than hiking: largely flat, well maintained, and manageable in about an hour if you do not stop, or 90 minutes at a normal pace with photographs. Since the route is now one-way, you either walk back along a marked forest trail over the hill — pleasant, around 40 minutes — or take the shuttle. That one-way system, along with timed-entry tickets, was introduced because the gorge became a bottleneck: on peak summer mornings it was shoulder-to-shoulder on a walkway barely a metre wide.

Practicalities matter more here than at most Slovenian sites. The gorge opens roughly April to October and closes entirely in winter, and in high season the 09:00–13:00 slots sell out, so book online rather than turning up. Adult entry is €15 in 2026, children 3–15 pay €5, and parking is €5. It sits 4 km from Bled — 10 minutes by car, a 45-minute walk, or the seasonal shuttle from Bled bus station. Bring shoes with grip: the boards stay wet from spray even on dry days.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Vintgar Gorge cost in 2026?

Adult entry is €15, children aged 3 to 15 pay €5, and car parking is €5 (campervans more). Tickets are timed-entry and sold by the gorge's own operator. In July and August the morning slots between 09:00 and 13:00 regularly sell out because hourly visitor numbers are capped, so buy online in advance rather than relying on the ticket window.

How long does it take to walk Vintgar Gorge?

The walkway itself is 1.6 km and takes about an hour at an unhurried pace, or 90 minutes if you stop often for photographs. The route is one-way, so add roughly 40 minutes for the marked forest trail back over the hill, or use the shuttle. Budget two hours in total from car park to car park.

Is Vintgar Gorge suitable for children or people with limited mobility?

It suits children who can walk 3 km comfortably — the boardwalk is flat and railed throughout. It does not suit pushchairs or wheelchairs: sections are narrow, stepped and slippery with spray. Anyone unsteady on wet timber, or uneasy with water directly beneath an open walkway, should think carefully before booking.

Is Vintgar Gorge open in winter?

No. The gorge closes for the winter, opening roughly from April to October depending on conditions, because ice and falling rock make the walkway unsafe. If you are visiting Bled between November and March, the Bled and Bohinj lake walks and Bled Castle stay open instead — and check vintgar.si for exact opening dates.

Can you get to Vintgar Gorge from Bled without a car?

Yes. It is 4 km from Bled, walkable in about 45 minutes on marked paths through Podhom, and a seasonal shuttle bus runs from Bled bus station during the open season. Plenty of visitors also cycle. Parking at the gorge is limited and charged, so the shuttle is often the easier option in July and August.

Is Vintgar Gorge worth it alongside Lake Bled?

Yes — it is the most common and best-matched addition to a Bled day, and only 10 minutes away. Bled gives you the lake, island and castle; Vintgar gives you an entirely different landscape at close range. If you have a full day at Bled, doing both is comfortable. If you have only half a day, the lake and island come first.
